Directions:
You will update your wiki page upon reading each part of the novel. The novel is divided up into three parts, and with each update you should include:

1. Record three to five key passages that reveal the personality traits of your character from the reading.
2. After the first reading, consider the following: these men/women are different versions of gender stereotypes. What “type” of man/woman would each be? What do you think is Austen’s view of these stereotypes?
3. Create a sociogram or chart in which you identify his or her relationship to others, how he or she treats others and how others treat your character. Update that diagram as the novel progresses.
4. Trace the neoclassic characteristics of your character, recording two key passages from each reading.
5. At the end of the novel, you need to compare your character to one in a modern movie or novel character.

Neoclassicism:
o A literary movement of the Restoration and 18th Century
o Writers turned to classical Greek and Roman literary models and standards
o Rejected individualism and extravagance of the Renaissance
o Age of essays and letters

CHARACTERISTIC OF NEOCLASSICISM:
1. Stressed: order, logic, restraint of emotion – a need to follow the rules and maintain reason
2. A belief that literature should be judged in terms of its service to man. So life and art are one.
3. Called “The Age of Satire:” authors satirized morality, society, government, lack of decorum and good taste; anything was fair fodder for fueling satire.
4. Avoided the mysterious and obscure – no dungeons and dragons in this literature
5. Saw man as limited and imperfect and in constant need of
improvement
